Programs

CHAPEL

Chapel is held every Monday at 8:30 am.  Guest speakers provide the students with meaningful messages in this forum.  Music, announcements, and student and staff recognition are also part of the chapel program.

MUSIC

Music classes are held weekly.  Andrews Christian School students are taught to appreciate different styles of music and musical instruments.  In December 2005, the upper school chorus presented a formal Christmas concert showcasing music from several different countries.  In addition, the lower school presented the Christmas musical "The First Noel".   In May 2005, the lower school presented "Fish Tales", a musical drama.  The upper school chorus gave their final concert of the year during the eighth grade promotion ceremony.

BAND

Beginning with the 2005-2006 school year, a band program will be available to students in the upper school (grades 5-8).  The upper school band presented its first concert in December 2005.

ART

Students receive art instruction weekly.  The students are exposed to different styles of art and artists, and are given the opportunity to imitate the techniques of famous artists.  Art history, as well as cultural history, is interwoven into the curriculum.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The students receive 50 minutes of P.E. instruction weekly, in addition to regularly scheduled recess time.  The goal of the physical education program is for the students to learn to embody a physically healthy lifestyle.

COMPUTER INSTRUCTION

Each class is scheduled to use the school's computer lab for 40 minutes weekly.  Students are taught familiarity with the computer through Microsoft Windows.  Classes are also able to use the computer lab at other times if space is available.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Student Government elections are held in the fall, shortly after the start of the new school year.  Representatives are elected from the upper elementary and middle school classrooms.   Andrews Christian School's Student Government members plan school-wide spirit days, such as Pajama Day and Dr. Seuss Day.  Members of the Student Government are responsible for monthly Friday canteen, donating the profits to a school project.  Last year's Student Government purchased a digital camera for the school.

STANFORD TESTING

ACS uses the Stanford School Testing program.  This testing program is widely accepted across the country.  The philosophy behind school-wide testing is the objective ability to measure student achievement, and the ability to see strengths and weaknesses within the curriculum.  Student gains can be compared from one year to the next, thereby giving the staff the knowledge to teach to the students' needs.

Hot Lunches

Hot, nutritious meals are served in the Andrews Christian School lunchroom daily.  Students have the option of eating school lunch or bringing lunch from home.  Lunch fees for the 2005-2006 school year are $2.50 per day.  Daily lunch includes an entree, vegetable and/or fruit, dessert, and a drink.

KIDS VOTING

ACS participates in Kids Voting, Georgetown County activities.  Kids Voting is a civics based non-partisan curriculum, which teaches the students the importance of the responsibility of voting.  The students are able to vote in special Kids Voting polls on the day of most major elections.

SUN NEWS SPELLING BEE

ACS participates in the Sun News Spelling Bee.  Each year students from the upper elementary classes compete in a school spelling bee to determine a representative to be sent to the regional spelling bee.  This year's spelling bee representative was super spelling sixth grader Macy Bratcher.

SCIENCE FAIR

ACS hosts an annual school-wide science fair each spring.  Kindergarten and first grade classes exhibit a class project, while second grade and above field individual projects.  Science fair projects are judged and winners are announced in chapel.  The science fair remains on display for several days for parents and friends to view.

BOOK FAIR

Book fair is held twice each year, in the fall and spring.  This gives the students the opportunity to purchase quality literature at reasonable prices.

GRANDPARENTS DAY

Grandparents Day is celebrated each September at ACS.  Grandparents are invited to visit the school, and are treated to a special chapel program in their honor.  Muffins and juice are provided for the guests after chapel.  It is a wonderful time of fellowship for the ACS community.

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips are arranged and scheduled by the ACS staff to enhance the students' learning in the classroom.  Field trips are pertinent to the material covered in the classroom, and help extend the students' learning.  Some examples of such trips include live theater at the Dock Street Theater in Charleston, America's oldest theater, the Andrews Old Town Hall Museum, the SC Aquarium and Ripley's Aquarium, the South Carolina Children's Museum, and many other destinations.

Each spring, the upper school participates in a "Leadership Trip".  This overnight field trip is planned to provide unique experiences for our students, while teaching them skills needed to be responsible pre-teens and teenagers.  The spring 2005 Leadership Trip was held at Camp TVR in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains.

SPRING ARTS WEEK

The first full week of May is ACS's annual Spring Arts Week.  Many artists are scheduled to visit the school during the week and share their talents with our students.  Artists from all genres are invited to attend: dance, visual arts, dramatic arts, music, storytelling and more.  The week culminates on Friday with our annual outdoor Arts Fling.  Parent volunteers from each class set up arts-related booths, and the classes rotate through each.  The day ends with grilled hamburgers and a band.

BOOKMOBILE

The Georgetown County Library's Bookmobile visits Andrews Christian School twice a month.  All students are given the opportunity to use the bookmobile for research or to check out books.  In addition, the Andrews branch of the Georgetown County Public Library is within easy walking distance of the school.  Classes are encouraged to take advantage of its resources.
